How do I get educated in outdoor sports?

Adventure sports involve a certain level of risk and good education is important. Don't accept second rate classes, learn what it takes to be safe out on all your explorations with quality education in outdoor adventures.

A fantastic question! Whether your sport of interest is kayaking or canyoneering, backpacking or stand up paddle boards, there are classes going on all the time. Unfortunately, not all wilderness adventure classes are created equally. South by Southwest Adventures believes that quality education is paramount to safe, fun, enjoyable adventures and we put a lot of time in to research, vetting and taking as many classes as we can personally. The goal is that any class we point you to, our own or an outside source, will provide you with the latest and best knowledge, the highest level of safety, and the best possible value to get you the skill set you need.

Must we always teach our children with books? Let them look at the mountains and the stars up above. Let them look at the beauty of the waters and the trees and flowers on earth. They will then begin to think, and to think is the beginning of a real education.

And keep in mind, many of the classes you will see featured on our pages here will NOT be South by Southwest classes. While we do have some of the best instructors working with us, the point is to get you the knowledge and experience you need to get out there. But rest assured, South by Southwest will never suggest any class we haven't verified as the highest quality learning experience. If you know of a class we don't feature here, give us a call and we will give you all the questions you should ask to determine if the class fits your needs.

Our Qualifications

That said, we are the only ACA certified river training company in the state. Most of our lead guides are ACA instructors and we keep additional certifications in wilderness medicine, survival and rescue. Our partners are certified outdoor medical educators, wilderness survivalists, and canyoneering experts. We ask for valid current certifications of all our staff and partner organizations to assure you are getting the latest information and the current best practices in all your class experiences.

For Educational Organizations

We also work with schools, youth groups, and other educational organizations to provide hands on learning experience for your students regardless of age or background. From 8th grade science classes to adult education organizations, we adapt our tours as well as custom events to teach hands on environmental science, local cultural history, ecology, survival, Leave No Trace and many other areas of instruction. If you have he personnel to teach and just need the gear, logistic and support, or if you need the instructors too, contact us. We are happy to put together the perfect educational opportunity for your students.
